Pattern Review: Petite Stitchery Garnet Winter Coat

I was able to test a new coat this month from Petite Stitchery and it is such an easy sew!  The Garnet Winter Coat features several different options to customize your perfect coat. You can choose from rounded or square collar or if you prefer a hood there is a pixie hood and rounded hood option instead!  You can choose from toggles or a sash (or both!) for closures with optional inner ties as well.  Finally, how about a fully reversible coat option!? The size range is huge from 2T up to girls 17 and requires heavyweight knits with a little stretch (yes fleece is an option!).

For my daughter’s coat I blended sizes from a 10 length and a 6 width which was very simple to do.  I used a double knit (from Joann Fabrics ages ago) and lined with a super plush also from Joann.  Since we are in South Florida a hood isn’t really needed here so we chose the rounded collar option.  I opted for one toggle closure and a sash but skipped the inner ties.  We did not do fully reversible but could easily go that route by adding another toggle on the lining side.

Pattern Review: Keeley Cardigan by Rebecca Page

I was so excited to sew up the new Child’s Keeley Cardigan pattern for Rebecca Page last month as a brand ambassador for them.  My oldest is in the “pre-teen” stage and getting more difficult to please with handmade clothing.  She jumped at the chance to wear this cardigan though!

This pattern comes in a huge size range from newborn up to size 12 which means it will fit all of my kids without buying baby sizing as well!  It features 2 lengths (top or midi), 2 sleeves (3/4 or long) and has optional accents such as side vents, pockets and buttons or snaps.

I sewed up the size 11-12 length blended to a 7-8 width for my ten year old.  I opted for midi length with long sleeves and we skipped all the extra features this time as we were on a time crunch.  Let me tell you it was SO easy and quick, 20 minutes tops from cut to hemming.  It was simple to blend sizes and fits her just perfect.  I used a sweater knit from Hobby Lobby for this cardigan and have several more planned with pockets and side vents.  She loves it and has worn it every time it is fresh out of the dryer!  Any pattern that can please a picky pre-teen is a win in my book.

Pattern Review: Unicorn Cape by Rebecca Page

I was so excited to sew up the new Child’s Unicorn Cape pattern for Rebecca Page last month as a new brand ambassador for them.  All of my kids are crazy about dress up and with Halloween around the corner as well I knew this would be a well loved pattern in our house.

The best part about this pattern is that you have creative freedom to add pretty much ANYTHING you want to this!  The cape features a mane, birthmark, nostrils, ears, horn fringe and horn as well as optional elastics to attach to the wrists.  There are also options to add elastice to the hood and a fastener for under the chin.

I sewed up the size 4-8 and opted for only the wrist elastic.  I added the mane, ears, and horn but skipped the horn fringe.  There are pattern pieces for the eyes, nostrils and birthmark but there are also svg files to use your favorite cutting machine.  I used the svg files and did my eyes with heat transfer vinyl.  I did use the pattern pieces though for my nostrils and birthmark and used fabric backed with heat and bond to attach those instead of sewing them.  For my horn I wanted something sturdy so I used glitter canvas found at Hobby Lobby in the ribbon isle.  It worked perfect for giving the horn enough stability to stand up.

For the mane I used yarn but you can use fabric, felt, ribbon, anything your heart desires!  Luckily I am a little bit of a hoarder of craft supplies so I didn’t need to buy any yarn for mine and used what I already had in my supplies.  The mane does take quite a bit of material and is very time consuming but well worth it in the end!  We also dressed ours up with paper flowers around the horn and in the mane.  For the cape fabric I wanted something lightweight that wouldn’t weigh my kids down when they were wearing it so I used quilting cotton (also from Hobby Lobby)  for both the lining and the outer.

The instructions are very detail oriented and easy to follow.  While it is not a quick sew it is beginner friendly and your kids will have endless hours of dress up fun when you are finished!

Petite Stitchery Saffron and Sage Patterns

I was able to test out three new woven patterns for Petite Stitchery these last few weeks.  The Baby SaffronSaffron, the Girls Saffron , and the Girls Sage all released this week and are fantastic for Fall!

The Girls Sage  is a great layering piece for Fall as you can wear it over a shirt or you can wear it alone and throw on a cardigan when it cools off.  This pattern comes in a top or dress length with a feminine V shape on the bodice.  You can choose from a color blocked bodice, slip on without closures, solid bodice or a button placket.  It also includes optional pockets.  I have grown to love buttons but I am also a sucker for a quick no closure sew which this was!  For ours I chose the dress length, slip on solid bodice with pockets.  This bodice is great for embellishing with trim, buttons, lace, you name it.  I layered ours over the Sapphire which is a great layering piece.  I used a dark olive cotton lycra from Purple Seamstress for the shirt and both fabrics for the dress are from Joann.  Grading between sizes was super easy as well, I graded this as a size 10 for length with a size 5 for width to get that perfect fit.

Next up are both the  Baby Saffron and the Girls Saffron patterns.  Both patterns include options for a scoop back slip on bodice, button back bodice, and 2 different color blocked bodice options.  There are 3 sleeve lengths, 3 skirt lengths and a pocket option with both patterns.  The baby pattern also includes a bubble romper option with a snap panel.  This pattern is also great for adding fun embellishments like trim and lace.  I only needed to grade the baby pattern for a 12 month width and 18 month length and again it was very simple to do to get that perfect fit.

For the baby pattern I sewed up a bubble romper and a color blocked slip on bodice dress.  For the girls size I also sewed up a color blocked slip on bodice dress.  The romper fabric and lace are both last season from Hobby Lobby as well as the animal fabric on both dresses.
