Pattern Review: Nightingale Cardigan and Top by Striped Swallow Designs

I was so excited to test out the new Nightingale pattern for Striped Swallow Designs a few weeks ago.  I am a sucker for cardigans and feminine details so this pattern was right up my alley.

There is an oversized cardigan with a high-low hem and bishop sleeve option as well as a button up crop top with long sleeve option.  There are optional pockets as well.  If you prefer a straight hem there is also a blog post on the Striped Swallow Designs website on how to hack this into a straight hem instead of high-low.

I sewed up the cardigan option with pockets and am just in love with the bishop sleeve!  For my cardigan I used an oatmeal french terry from Knitpop (I bought it a few years ago though) and sewed a size medium.  I have already sewed up a second one in sweater knit and have 2 more planned.  This is a fairly easy sew as long as you are comfortable with buttonholes.  If you are scared of sewing buttonholes, don’t be!  It’s much easier than it looks and there are tons of tutorials on youtube to teach you!

I paired my cardigan with SOS pants from Patterns for Pirates and the Harbor Knot Tee (in slim fit/lower knot option) from Striped Swallow Designs.  This was my first Harbor Knot Tee although I have made several in the tank option and let me just say it is LOVE and I see many more in my wardrobe soon!

I was able to get my holiday sewing started early with the new Children’s Family Pjs pattern for Rebecca Page last month as a brand ambassador for them.  I am often a last minute type of sewist so having my kids’ Christmas pajamas finished (and photographed!) before December first is a huge accomplishment for me!

This pattern comes in a large size range from 12 months up to size 12 which means it will fit all of my kids without buying baby sizing as well!  It features 2  bottoms (shorts or pants), 2 sleeves (short or long) and has optional accents such as pants inseam pockets, chest pocket and piping!  This pattern is for woven fabrics such as flannel, satin, cotton, etc.  This is also the perfect time of year to score some great deals on flannel to stock up for these pajamas!

I sewed up 8 pairs (yes EIGHT) for my kids!  I sewed up a non-Christmas pair in shorts and short sleeves for each of them to wear year round and then sewed coordinating Christmas pairs in pants and short sleeves (because Florida) as well.  I skipped the piping and chest pocket on all of them but did add the inseam pants pockets to all but the baby pairs.  I used flannel (all found at Joann) and snaps (instead of buttons) for all of the sets.  I did some size grading as well and found it very simple to do resulting in that perfect fit on every pair.

Pattern Review: Petite Stitchery Garnet Winter Coat

I was able to test a new coat this month from Petite Stitchery and it is such an easy sew!  The Garnet Winter Coat features several different options to customize your perfect coat. You can choose from rounded or square collar or if you prefer a hood there is a pixie hood and rounded hood option instead!  You can choose from toggles or a sash (or both!) for closures with optional inner ties as well.  Finally, how about a fully reversible coat option!? The size range is huge from 2T up to girls 17 and requires heavyweight knits with a little stretch (yes fleece is an option!).

For my daughter’s coat I blended sizes from a 10 length and a 6 width which was very simple to do.  I used a double knit (from Joann Fabrics ages ago) and lined with a super plush also from Joann.  Since we are in South Florida a hood isn’t really needed here so we chose the rounded collar option.  I opted for one toggle closure and a sash but skipped the inner ties.  We did not do fully reversible but could easily go that route by adding another toggle on the lining side.

Pattern Review: Keeley Cardigan by Rebecca Page

I was so excited to sew up the new Child’s Keeley Cardigan pattern for Rebecca Page last month as a brand ambassador for them.  My oldest is in the “pre-teen” stage and getting more difficult to please with handmade clothing.  She jumped at the chance to wear this cardigan though!

This pattern comes in a huge size range from newborn up to size 12 which means it will fit all of my kids without buying baby sizing as well!  It features 2 lengths (top or midi), 2 sleeves (3/4 or long) and has optional accents such as side vents, pockets and buttons or snaps.

I sewed up the size 11-12 length blended to a 7-8 width for my ten year old.  I opted for midi length with long sleeves and we skipped all the extra features this time as we were on a time crunch.  Let me tell you it was SO easy and quick, 20 minutes tops from cut to hemming.  It was simple to blend sizes and fits her just perfect.  I used a sweater knit from Hobby Lobby for this cardigan and have several more planned with pockets and side vents.  She loves it and has worn it every time it is fresh out of the dryer!  Any pattern that can please a picky pre-teen is a win in my book.
